A diving helmet is more than just a face mask or a breathing apparatus; it is all of that combined into one item. They are traditionally used when a diver is using surface supplied air, but they can be adapted to scuba diving as well. The helmet completely covers a diver’s head, and encases it in air. This can be especially useful when working under hazardous conditions.
For instance, a diver can wear a diving helmet and an extra thick dry suit when entering water that may contain toxic chemicals. The entire assembly is watertight, allowing the diver to remain free of any environmental hazards they encounter. Of course, if the suit’s integrity is compromised, a diver could still come into contact with the chemicals in question.
A diving helmet is made of solid, inflexible materials and connected to the rest of a diver’s suit via a neck dam, which is essentially a large waterproof barrier that connects the neck of a suit with the base of the diving helmet. They are bulkier than a diving mask, but they are also safer. Recreational diving rarely uses a diving helmet, but they are used in industrial applications regularly.
