A diving suit helmet is the first type of head gear that divers wore. It predates scuba diving by several decades, and is still the standard equipment used in surface fed diving. It covers the entire head, rather than just a portion, like a mask does. It is made of a hard material- the first diving helmets were actually made of metal.
Today a diving suit helmet is usually made of impact resistant plastics, as they offer the best weight to strength ratios available. A helmet will completely envelop the diver’s head in air, keeping it free of the water. It will also provide an attachment point for a surface tether, as well as communications devices. They are often used in military and industrial applications because they are safer and less prone to accidental death than breathing with the aid of a mouthpiece.
While a surface tether isn’t used in scuba diving, it is a necessity in surface fed diving. Surface fed diving is exactly what it sounds like. In it, a diver is supplied with air from the surface, rather than from tanks on their back. This is useful for prolonged diving, which is another area that diving suit helmets excel. Because there is no energy exerted to keep breathing through a helmet, if a diver loses consciousness, they can continue to receive air until a rescue is mounted. This can mean the difference between life and death in some situations.
