Full face scuba masks are a cross between a diving helmet and a recreational scuba mask. They offer full coverage, from chin to forehead, keeping a diver’s entire face free of the water. They can be useful, especially in situations where a diver is using a re-breather. They are also useful if a diver is going to need to be in voice communication with others, as via headsets.
A re-breather will recycle unused oxygen in a diver’s exhale for use in subsequent breaths. This allows a diver to stay under longer with the same amount of air. However, many divers have a habit of letting a small amount of water into their mouth when they inhale, and then exhaling to force the water out. If this technique is used with a re-breather, it will cause the water to be worked into the system, which will result in serious systematic malfunctions. A full face scuba mask will avoid this potential problem entirely by keeping water away from the diver’s mouth.
The other major use for full face scuba masks is voice communication. When using a mouthpiece, it is impossible for a diver to speak. However if their entire face is covered in a diving mask, they can be outfitted with a microphone and allowed to communicate with other divers and even the surface. This can be invaluable when conducting commercial diving, as well as for some military applications.
