There is currently only one heated wetsuit on the market but its popularity is sure to spawn many variations. Rip Curl is the pioneering company that installed heating coils and a waterproof battery pack into a high quality wetsuit. The coils weave along the back of the wetsuit heating the surfers torso keeps them warm.
On its highest setting a heated wetsuit can keep a surfer warm in cold waters for up to two hours allowing them to catch plenty of waves. They can also be recharged in a regular car cigarette lighter. On the medium setting they create warmth for up to six hours. Rip Curl tested these suits in the icy waters off the coast of Iceland with much success.
The heated wetsuit allows the surfer to wear a thinner wetsuit than they normally would which improves the comfort and maneuverability of the surfer. A six millimeter thick suit can be substituted for a five or even four millimeter thickness with the same amount of warmth.
