A kid’s wetsuit is merely a smaller version of a regular wetsuit. Often there is no difference in the materials and construction besides their size. They are made from the same closed cell neoprene as regular wetsuits for great heat retaining capacity. When fit correctly they are quite warm.
A kid’s wetsuit comes in two basic styles, the short suit or “shorty” and the long suit which is called a “steamer”. The short suit is great in warmer waters that are still too cold to be comfortable for long periods of time. A steamer is great for cold waters and comes in many different thicknesses depending on the desired warmth. A thick suit will be warmer but decrease mobility.
A kid’s wetsuit should be tight fitting for best results. Even though kids grow really fast a wetsuit that is too big won’t be useful at all. The neoprene needs to be in contact with the skin to provide any warmth. Many kids versions are much more stretchy than adult versions to accommodate a child’s fast growth.
