A compulsory scuba diving equipment list will always include
a mask, a regulator, swim fins and a gas tank among other things.
Oftentimes a wetsuit will be left off the list which is a critical
mistake. A wetsuit’s only function is not to keep divers
warm in cooler waters. A suit protects warm water divers from
overexposure to the sun.
Depending on water and weather conditions and the length and
type of dive a warm water diver may be able to get by without
a wetsuit. For anyone diving in cold water (down to about 45º
F), a wetsuit should be at the top of the list of necessary scuba
diving equipment. Cold water suits are built with special seams
which do not allow water to reach the diver. They are typically
designed to keep a diver comfortable for up to 60 minutes in water
33 feet deep and shallower.
Scuba diving equipment improves constantly with technology and
wetsuits are no exception. They are typically made from a synthetic
rubber called closed-cell neoprene. Modern suits are being made
with spandex in addition to neoprene. This keeps the suit from
shrinking over time and allows the diver to fatten up a bit without
being terribly uncomfortable.
