A scuba diving gear checklist should feature a quality diving
regulator at the top. A diving regulator is a type of gas pressure
regulator which allows a controlled flow of breathing gas to escape
cylinder. A variety of breathing gas blends are available for
different types of dives. A regulator will include one or more
valves and automatically lower pressure at each stage of the dive.
This piece of scuba diving gear is similar to industrial breathing
sets used out of the water. Such breathing systems are the type
worn by firefighters or other emergency professionals. They are
also known as Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Add Underwater
to the name and the acronym becomes SCUBA.
It’s no coincidence the sport got its name from this particular
piece of scuba diving gear. People often mistakenly refer to a
diving regulator as a demand valve. A demand valve is only the
small part of the regulator that releases air into the diver’s
mouth. The demand valve senses when a diver begins to inhale and
allows the proper flow of air into the mouth.
