Scuba diving regulators are one of the most important aspects of diving equipment. These devices are designed to allow oxygen to flow from the tank to the lungs of the diver, but only when the diver takes a breath. This ensures that no air is wasted, allowing for longer dives.
The main purpose of scuba diving regulators is to take the high pressure air from an oxygen tank and reduce it to the ambient pressure of the water. This makes the air much easier to breathe than it would be otherwise. This process is accomplished through three stages.
The first stage of most scuba diving regulators is to reduce the high pressure air from the tanks to something more suitable for breathing. The second stage takes place in the mouthpiece and delivers air on demand as the diver breathes. The third stage disperses the used air into either the water or into a rebreather.
