Essential scuba gear must include a Buoyancy Control Device
(BCD). Buoyancy is an object’s ability to float. BCDs come
in many different types and are necessary to regulate buoyancy
on the surface and under the water. BCDs not only enhance the
diving experience, they also save lives.
Some experienced divers don’t include a BCD on their list
of mandatory scuba gear. Although it is possible to complete a
dive without a BCD it is not a good idea, even for experts. Buoyancy
Control Devices allow divers to ascend and descend at a desired
rate. They also help the diver achieve neutral buoyancy.
Neutral buoyancy refers to when a diver successfully remains
at a constant depth. According to physics this condition occurs
when the body’s mass is equal to the amount of water it
displaces. Expert divers may have the ability to reach this state
through controlled breathing. For everyone else looking to maintain
neutral buoyancy, a BCD is an essential piece of scuba gear.
