Scuba Tank

A scuba tank is one of the most important pieces required to go scuba diving. These dive cylinders are designed to carry pressurized air and come in many different sizes. When coupled with a regulator a diver can easily breathe the depressurized air underwater. They are made from high quality aluminum or steel for durability.

A scuba tank should be checked for leaks before and after diving. Soapy water can be placed around the openings to check for leaks there, any bubbling indicates an air leak which can be unfortunate and dangerous underwater. Dents and dings may weaken the tank as well and should be examined for safety.

A scuba tank can be filled with a number of different breathing gasses. The most common is atmospheric air which consists of roughly 70% inert nitrogen and 28% oxygen. Pure oxygen is never used and can be fatal when breathed. Helium and other gas mixtures are effective substitutes for air especially at lower depths. When nitrogen gets into the blood stream it causes a painful affliction called the bends which can be avoided with breathing gasses that don’t contain nitrogen or by slow ascents to the surface.
