Snorkeling fins work to provide propulsion. They are not necessary for snorkeling. However, they are simply a smarter choice when it comes to efficiency.
In fact, snorkeling fins increase the speed of swimmers by about fifty percent. In addition to speed, they also benefit maneuverability. As they focus the propulsion power on the legs, this takes strain off of the arms. As a result, a snorkeler will have more freedom for handling equipment and exploring.
Snorkeling fins will fall under one of two categories. These are open-heel and full foot. Open-heel designs are held in place by an adjustable strap. This ability for adjustable fitting provides more security and is easier to put on and take off. Full-foot designs fit over the entire foot. This means that they provide heel protection which the open styles do not. However, they do not fit so snugly and securely.
